“Alas, alas… For in one hour so great riches is come to nought.” – Revelation 18:16-17
If we are not careful we can get caught up in the materialism of our society. Willie Stokes reportedly had his son buried in a Cadillac-style coffin with $100 bills stuffed between his diamond ring laden fingers in February of 1984. As they were lowering his son into the ground one attendee reportedly said ” Now that’s living!” How ironic! The famous actor Will Smith best summed up this world’s materialistic attitude when he said “Too many people spend money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t want, to impress people they don’t like.”
Many work their whole lives for things that can be lost in a heartbeat.
Jesus said in Luke 12:15 “take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. ” What about you? What is your focus? Is it on acquiring more “things” here on this earth, or is it on serving the Lord and laying up your treasures in Heaven. The Laodicean Church was so enamored with the things of this world that they didn’t feel that they needed anything else…. not even a closer walk with our Lord Jesus. Revelation 3:17
Where is your treasure? Don’t allow the enemy to deceive or distract you with all the things of this world. One day they will all be gone. Matthew 6:19-21 Today, make seeking the Kingdom of God the priority in all that you do and He will give you all that you need. Matthew 6:33, John 6:27
